Education During National Special Needs

Every October, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) commemorates Special Needs Month to expand awareness of special needs planning and the rights of those with disabilities and their families.

Benzinga published a press release, titled “NAELA Celebrates National Special Needs Law Month in October,” which discusses special needs planning, which involves special needs trusts, care management, advocacy to preserve educational or civil rights, public benefits such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid, along with a variety of other important issues.

Special Needs Law is a specialized practice of law that involves representing, counseling, and assisting people with disabilities and their families. This involves a number of legal issues, such as disability planning and mental health. These attorneys focus on promoting the highest quality of life for the individuals impacted. Special Needs Law attorneys usually look at their clients’ situation from a holistic viewpoint and discuss legal, medical, financial, social, and family issues.

In October, NAELA member attorneys will focus on helping those with special needs by identifying resources and implementing comprehensive plans. Many NAELA members will be celebrating National Special Needs Law Month with activities in their communities. They’ll be covering areas such as the following:

  • Financing long-term care;
  • Care management;
  • Durable powers of attorney;
  • Guardianship and conservatorship;
  • Medicaid;
  • Medicare;
  • Planning for health care decision-making;
  • Special needs trusts; and
  • Social Security Income rules.

Why would we recommend D.T.F.? Several Reasons: Your ability to explain complex estate problems, clearly and patiently; your total lack of arrogance and pretense; a strong feeling that you are motivated by what you perceive is best for your client, rather than what would generate the largest legal fees; finally, and importantly, you are a lovely guy. Two words cannot sum up the entire process of creating my “trust.” I enjoyed your attention to detail, your patience of explaining terms and conditions until I understood, also giving me copies to read and understand. Thank you for your suggestions on what was best for “me” but still allowing me to make my choice. Most of all, thank you for thinking of “me.” Wells Fargo said “you were the best” I cannot deny that. Again thank you very much for everything. Anna is an asset or a compliment to the firm. She is warm and very caring. It was great doing business. Thank you.
